100 years +- of known history in this area where I found this heavy iron hook item. I found after cleaning that it has U.S. stamped into it and am curious as to what it was used for as well as approximate age. I added a bit of chalk so you can see it better. Looks complete with no attachment points. Thanks.

I’d guess it came through the military. They were great to paint, letter, mark or engrave everything with “US”. Silverware, mess kits, can openers, etc. I guess to cut down on confusion and theft. I don’t have a guess yet as to it’s purpose.

You lucky dog...that is a clinching block used by a blacksmith or farrier. I have one that was my grandfathers and I made one decades ago just like his. It is used to clinch horseshoe nails into a horses or mules hoof. The clinch keeps the points buried in the outer part of the hoof wall. VERY cool find !!
