Is this a handle?

This thing is heavy brass and 10.5 in long. The ends are broken off.

This pic shows an inscription on the front side. If it is supposed to be a Roman numeral 9, then it is apparently wrong.

I know it is not much to go on but any ideas.

Don't know what it may be, but the Roman Numeral 9 is "IX" and that would be wrong as you mention - or something else.

VIIII isn't necessarily wrong at all. IX is a modern conversion.

Well, so far we know it may or may not have been an illiterate Roman, but does anyone have thoughts as to what the object is?
