Josephine County, part of a survey tool??

Found this object in an area where a lot of water ditching had been done in the 19th century. It is slightly rounded like it was screwed to a round shaft of wood..? Has what I think are degree marks...any help appreciated.

I should have added measurements 3 1/8” by 1 1/4” . The coin is a dime for scale an 1853 arrows found in Plumas County California

Wow, I see it....!!! Incredible good eye you have...! I though maybe was for surveying ditch grade for mining water, I’m sure in these big ditch projects surveyors where involved.

Wait... I just saw you measurements. I think it is too small for a rifle butt plate.

I'll need to rethink it for a bit...

This scale is from the turn of the 20th C. It's a milk scale. Not sure that helps much but it may frame the time a little bit.

The area where this was found is remote and only the best Jeeps....wiling to get rock and road rash can go little modern trash, used a side by side to get to area

I thought about this one for a while and frankly don't have much more to offer on an ID.

We can see it's handmade and well made but from scrap material.

So I assume they needed to fix an item of importance in the field. A cracked tool handle or gun stock?

Its gotta be to fix a cracked stock. Like I said before its shaped to much like a buttplate for it not to be.

Yeah no telling what it was repurposed for, but if I was to guess some farmer in the 1930s came up with an idea to fix something of his with something he found out of mama's kitchen. When she went to look for it she asked, Dear Henry, have you seen my kitchen scale. He replied, it was in the draw last I saw it. Maybe it fix the problem or maybe it didn't, but if anything it was worth a try.
