MI DNR launched an interactive map of Michigan ship wrecks.... have not played with it much yet but it looks like it may have potential...

Shipwreck Locations

Use this map to:

  • Find shipwrecks, lighthouses, boating access sites and download data (.kml, .shp, .csv)
  • Search for a shipwreck by shipwreck name or location
  • Customize background to navigational charts, imagery or street view
  • Print aPDF map designed by you
This map is a work in progress. Its purpose is to provide an opportunity to explore and connect with many of the shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. We hope that it will provide a glimpse into Great Lakes maritime heritage to all who want to get wet or stay dry. We do not guarantee its accuracy as it will change over time as wrecks are discovered.

Regulating the Removal of Artifacts:
Part 761 Aboriginal Records and Antiquities, Michigan law, prohibits the removal, alteration and destruction of abandoned property which is in, on, under, or over the bottomlands of the Great Lakes including those within a Great Lakes underwater preserve without a permit issued by representatives of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Engaging in activities prohibited under Part 761 are crimes. A person seeking a permit must complete and file a prescribed application form.

To obtain an underwater salvage permit application, write to:
EGLE, Water Resources Division
P. O. Box 30458
Lansing, MI 48909-7958
