I've found a few like that and have seen quite a few posted. Is the front of yours plain? I'm not sure if they have ever been positively ID'd as 1812 specific buttons (although I suppose they could be civilian buttons from that time period).

The fact there's an 1812 navy motif on the back has always kind of baffled me and I don't know if a consensus has ever been reached.
