While browsing through old newspaper accounts, looking for treasure stories tonight, I lucked upon this article about a kettle of gold coins that was found in Brownwood in 1907! It's from the January 16, 1907 issue of the "Shiner Gazzette". Gold was only worth about $20 an ounce back then so the total value of those coins would be well over $200,000 today, probably much more, depending on their numismatic value! I know people scoff at me when I tell them that this area of central Texas probably holds as much or more buried treasure as any other area of its size in the entire country. Let them scoff. It doesn't bother me.
