This measures 1 1/4” across and weighs 16 grams. Pewter or lead I think. Help is greatly appreciated.

Pewter or lead...i think means it could possibly be brass:laughing7:...at least that's what it looks like from here
Yes it could be brass. Heavy for its size.
Here a a few similar, but are reproductions from Hanover brass. Yours has some patina on it, so it may be an older original one, someone here should know.at least you have an idea what it would have looked like. View attachment 2038699 View attachment 2038700
a close match for sure

Definitely a broken buckle tongue. The green patina says "brass". Naval/military, but might be private purchase militia or cadet related, as well as government issue. Nice find, I bet the rest of it is in the same spot.....

Ok... ready for this. ? ? ?
MAYBE... POSSIBLY... perhaps... might... .... heh

I knew this looked familiar ... but not to me as a buckle... so i searched around and it dawned on me...
This is definitely navy... we all know that... but i can pretty sure bet on that its confederate...
AND RARE if it is.... LIKE VERY... again... IF... (and all the other words i used above to say IF).
And the reason i say this is because if you look at the Confederate naval buttons... you see the similarities.
With all this babbling said...

The reason i cannot pin this down is because i think you have something AGAIN possibly... VERY special... I HOPE anyway. :)

IF it is what i think it is... definitely a banner find and then some.
IF not... then it may be some re-enactment or some other type... but ? ? ?

Head scratcher for sure.

I think it is better to do a bit more research before a overhopeful attribution.....I hope it is a rare one but these naval themed fouled anchor motifs have been popular on both military and civilian buckles and buttons.....Perhaps someone will nail it down with a for sure answer. No offence to Arcs theories though.

Well to some degree i agree... but... It is THE anchor... not just an anchor.

Ok... i got nothing.... so far... time for shower.
But... i got this for ya...

Um... i think its a sandcast buckle... but i dont see that "tab" like this one.... now with that said i am not 100% that they all had tabs like that "overlapping" so to speak... perhaps some did some didnt.

This is all conjecture... perhaps someone like CBG can shed some light in / on this.
Here is an example of a sandcast back... CS one.

Merf... i am at a dead end.... need to know for absolute if it is pewter or brass or ? ? ?
Try magnet as well just to be sure on that as well.

IF still unsure after trying ....
Try a slight streak test... do it from the broken off piece very gently... just enough for a rub... note the color... BOTH the piece AND the stone.

It is similar to a crude sand cast but it doesn't at the same time... in fact the more i look at it the more weird it becomes,

Also... The anchor ring differs from CS standards it seems... just a note.
