So I decided to put in some time at an old park today. After a while I get this very clean, tight high tone. I'm hoping half dollar. But I pull out this colossal gold ring. I'm incredulous because of the tone. It has some heft but I'm wondering if it is enough for the size of the ring. The ring is about size 13 and weighs about 13 grams. Clean it up and it is marked 10K. Whoopee! But then I flip it, and it is also marked .925 sterling. Ugh! So high and so low...so fast. I'm going to look at it this way. It is still 13 grams of silver (with some gold plate).

The ring has that late 1800s-early 1900s design look to it, very nice.
Really good hunt actually looking at what was recovered.

typically when a ring is marked as that one is, it likely had a small 10k gold part included. For example, the stone would have likely been a flat black onyx stone with a small hole drilled in the center in which was attached a small gold setting that held a tiny diamond. The 10k marking on the ring is for that setting and not an indication of the plating.

That is still a nice find. It's shiny. The reading was too high for a gold ring to begin with. The highest reading gold ring I ever found was a big 14K nugget ring. It read the same as a zinc or Indian Head penny. I never weighed it, but it was a honker. None of them came close to the silver range.
