Metal Detecting
Most elementary schools around here have large fences and locked gates. So you can't metal detect them any more. As a result they are accumulating a large amount of targets in the play areas. Today I found a school with a gate open and proceeded to hunt the 4 woodchip boxes in the school. The coins and other targets were everywhere! When I finished after 3 hours of hunting I dug out $13.00+ in clad, 1 wheatie, 1 Sakie dollar, 4 foreign coins, miscellaneous charms, 1 sterling ring, 1 sterling silver bracelet, and a 14K gold chain with a St Mary pendant!
With all these locked schools around it makes you wonder what's in them?

Hmmm. Does anyone else think that spoon looks like something was cooking in it?
Nice haul! Most schools around here have an LEO living on the grounds.
I'm not exactly sure what this spoon was designed for? A camping spoon? Or is it drug parafulnani?

Well it appears that the locked gate is for keeping the gold and silver. Nice haul. Never thought about the effects of locked totlots and playgrounds, but it would have that effect of keeping detectorists from a weekly visit. I will have to keep my eyes opened for unlocked gates. Most of our schools in the county are behind chain linked fences locked after school hours.

A few years ago all the schools were open. Due to the high crime, graffiti, and the vandalism all the schools are locked now. It's sad that many of my old hunting areas are now off limits.

I found one of those schools in another town close by, they had an open gate by the basketball courts and the tot-lot was all the way on the other side of the school and I scored also, there was $12.79 in change a gold pendant and 2 bling rings. Another school in the area I have scored there also but now they lock it up tight someone must have vandalized it, I had found gold there twice.

One has to kind of respect tot-lots after seeing the post.
Congratulations on the gold and silver.

I saw my first fenced in school 15 yrs ago while in Florida.
Kind of thought it was a strange thing to be schooled in a place like that.

I think closed campuses are becoming the normal thing now.

Parks are fun you killed it tons of targets there, I have been doing the same thing as you...schools here said no digging in the grass but I managed to sweet talk my way onto the tot lots of a few of them, groundskeepers are pretty cool about it usually if you just ask nicely.

Some tot lots can have a bonanza of targets. My record is $35.00+ in one tot lot in Vallejo Calif.

One within 1/2 mile of my home I usually ignore and concentrate on the volleyball court in the same park. But one day last week was not ready to stop hunting and found a $400 man 14k gold wedding band by the merry go round thing. Totally shocked. Never found much in a totlot but clad coins, bobby pins, foil. Now I am hunting more totlots.

I wonder if you went to the school principal and gave him everything you found. Wonder if he would find you a great resource and give you permission to hunt other areas on the school grounds? Just wondering...

Go at night & look for the janitor. I hunted several schools at night with the janitors permission. All they asked was when they were done you met them at the gate when they locked up. An offer to help haul the trash to the dumpster, shared coffee from your thermos or your spare sammich is a tiny price to pay to hunt basically virgin ground.
