Here's the deal...I'm in CT...driving to Florida(Clearwater area) around November 1st...and returning in about 2 weeks...Will be renting a vehicle...I need to bring back some furniture: queen size bed(no mattresses), 2 dressers, a sewing machine(cabinet type) and probably a few boxes of other stuff....I'd rather not rent a moving truck to go down and back, since I will be doing some local traveling while I'm down there.....I checked renting cargo vans for the round trip, but everything seems to be based on rental fee + mileage change...lots of money...Other options I considered.. renting a pickup for the whole trip and hoping everything fits...or just renting a car and having the stuff shipped back to CT.. Any advice on the most economical way to accomplish this would be much appreciated...Thanks

Rent a pick up and trailer. Shop around, the prices vary hundreds of dollars,
you will be surprised. Gnewt

OK, I'll be different! (not hard)

You might try running an ad in Craigslist in clearwater describing your need to move a small load to your destination and see if someone with a pickup is up for a roadtrip???

You'd have to spring for their gas roundtrip and motel costs for them, food...

Might be worth a try.

Or, take train or bus down, rent van to come back with the goods.
Check in advance about 1 way and availability.

If you decide to rent a pickup truck, check with local car dealerships. Some of them have better rental rates than the rental companies.

You could always drive your car down and rent a pickup and a tow dolly for your car for the ride back (assuming your car is small & suited to a dolly)

If I had the time or patience, I might persue some of the other options suggested..I guess l'll rent a pickup and if need be, get a trailer when I get down there..It's been awhile since I rented any vehicle..car or moving van....Seems like there are more restrictions than there use to be...mileage, drop-off and where you can take them.....Thanks to all who replied...

Van is better!

don't have to worry about rainy weather, or theft.

Rent a Truck my little sneaky snake!
If you pack it right it will all fit im sure...
You dont have a buddy who will loan you his truck or drive you down there?

you better do some treasure hunting on the beaches while your there!

I would call a University in the Clearwater area. Find out who to talk to to place a help wanted add in their paper and to post it on their bulletin boards etc... Hire a college kid to rent a uhaul and pick the stuff up bring it to you. Offer to pay for the u-haul and gas and food. The kid gets the ride home for free.

rmptr..I would prefer renting a van for the reasons you mentioned....Problem is I haven't been able to locate a place that allows them to be taken out of state..

Trish...My boss did offer one of his trucks...I'm just not comfortable taking it that far and risking something happening...At least if the rental craps out, I don't have to worry about it...or my job...Have a buddy to drive me there?...That would require socializing...as I said...I haven't the time or patience.. .. Sorry I won't be able to swing by and visit you..... :tongue3: ;D ...Will be bringing the detector though...

Boomer...I have to go to Florida for issues other than just picking up the furniture...and I'll need to rent a vehicle anyway, so I may as well haul the crap myself....But thanks for the suggestion..

i was in a similar position once. couldn't rent a truck to save my life, so i bought a 300.00 dollar pick up that was embarassing to be seen in...moved my stuff, sold the truck for 500.

In that case, Truck down I-95, get a U-Haul trailer back.

P.S. Good luck on them beaches, I never do very well cause all the eye candy distractions :tongue3:

LOL...How can you beat that......For what it's looking like it's going to cost me...I might even find something I'd want to keep...

Ha! Ha!

I had a friend bring a load of antiques out to CA from Oklahoma in a purchased cheapo truck.

They actually PUSHED it over some of the mountain passes in Colorado to get it over the hills!

I wouldn't advise it! Ha! Ha! Too much fun!
