Lots of clad, even a sliver of silver and a casualty.

Ever have one of those days? No! Not that kind! One where everything just seemed to fall into place?

Well, finally, I had a break in the boredom. It had been so hot that I was forced to shorten my walks. Managed some clad but it was difficult to even get out there!

Anyway, today just formed up to be an idyllic day for a classic walk! Still had to dodge some sun and mostly clad still. But.. A couple things made this particular walk one of my all time best.

First of all...here's most of the finds:

0814191940~2.jpg

A couple odd pieces to keep the day interesting:

0814191940a~2.jpg

A *tiny* necklace that AT surprised me with:

0814191940b~2.jpg

0814191941a~2.jpg

Even a couple wheaties!
And...long time coming...a silver dime!
The penny near the top just looked weird:

0814191942~2.jpg

The rim is silvery? :dontknow:

Now...to the find of the day!

You'll notice that Blingie is missing.

Here's the story. During my walk I was trying to cover ground that I knew I had never tried before. That isn't easy! For I have been to this place many, many times over the years!

I was going along pretty good, it was working! The sun poked out and I needed a bit of shade. Which happens to be at a premium here!

I noticed a teeny, tiny, patch of woods that I'd avoided before cuz it was just so plain full of trash! :BangHead:

I figured I could take the machine gun effect for a short period to escape the sun.

I fought hard but only managed a couple pennies and one nickel. :dontknow:

The clouds came back so I started to leave my shade. As I did, I looked at the trash covering the ground a lil harder. Lots and lots of broken glass. I noted the place for a possible bottle dig in the future. Even though they did seem like new bottles.

Just as I reached the tree line, I noticed an obvious dumping. I shrugged, but one...sort of shiny...bottom of a can kept tugging at my curiosity. I almost left it there because it was half buried and waaaaay back in some very prickly shrubs.

Now...you *all* know that when that "Spidey" sense creeps in, its hard to shake! I must've turned to walk away 4 or 5 times! Finally, I gave in.

I tried to reach it, using AT as a sort of probe. Then, quickly stopped when a thorn tried to tear at my cord. I tried a couple branches but they kept breaking.

I finally told myself that *now* I just HAVE to know!!

I went back to the car and got my small, farm field shovel. Took just a few whacks to get back to it and as I dug, the "can" got bigger and bigger! I said, oh fine! A large hubcap!! :BangHead:

But...no...it got longer too! :icon_scratch:

I finally got it out and found it was a large bowl like thing! The funniest thought came to mind. What if this thing is silver!!? NAAAAAH! COULDN'T BE! LOL!

I tried a magnet...no effect!!!!

I went back to the car and washed it off. Looking for a mark.

2019-08-13-16-03-26.jpg

Unless I miss my guess.....WOW!

OH!! And what of Blingie??

Well, when he came in to review my finds. As he always does. He took one look, ran over and dove right in!

0814191943~2.jpg

Poor thing!! I think it overwhelmed him!

Anyhoo...I know it was a long story. But...you needed something to do anyway. :tongue3:

IF....it truly is sterling. Its my largest piece found, EVER! Over 200 grams!!

If you made it this far...
Thank you for taking the time to peek!

Yep, I agree. Sterling Silver, and a bunch of it. That's definitely a walk with a Silver lining.
Thanks for sharing.

The weird penny looks like a zinc penny with a worn down edge, that would give the silvery look.

I agree with Noah D, it looks like the very thin copper coating has worn down to the zinc core.

It is always nice to have a good day detecting, but finding the silver bowl made it a GREAT Day. It is nice to find something really remarkable every now and then. Blingie must have brought you luck!

Woo hoo! That's a big chunk of silver! From the pic, it's surprising that it's less than half a pound. It looks huge!
On that zincoln... I dunno... it looks like there's enough zinc showing through on the edge that it is rolled down enough to cover the word TRUST. That doesn't look like normal wear to me. Strange.
Looks like you had a great day. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome find WHADI. From the markings, looks like Gorham silver from the 20th century. Here is a legend of their markings:

The weight is a bit shaky. It was too big for my digital scale. So I used an old manual balance. Approximately half a pound.

The penny? Its as you say. Kind of rolled down all the way around. Weird!

Thanks!

I figure some sort of intentional in this penny. But, intentional what? Coating? Grinding down? Stamping on a different planchet? The "silvery" edge is pretty smooth. Sort of rolls over the edge.

Would someone actually try to make a penny ring? :icon_scratch:
