The national seashore is off limits, but all town beaches seem to be ok, there are several dept of recreation sites that were supposed to have restrictions but are never enforced

Yep browser, that's what I hear too.

They are all real busy right now with the covid 19 thing going on, but keep a look out, you just never know when things could be turned around on us.
There were some terrific people here and world wide that stepped forward and made their points known. It still makes me smile the degree of shock our state lawmakers had to the overwhelming response against their about to be law against detecting. Oh to be a fly on the wall that day!

EARL51, yep we have the wet sand area so far. But park rangers have say over the land part of the parks, some will let you detect, some flat out won't, unless there has been a request to find a lost item by the loser of said item, to the park ranger, who can then ok the search.

On the gun ownership, you can own them legally but need to apply to your local police dept. for gun permit.

Calm down Captain, now don't get yourself all upset, we just have to watch them like hawks.

We already fired a shot across their bow!

Ok, this thread still is open so I will post the law:

302 Mass. Reg. 12.04
Section 12.04 - Rules of Conduct on DCR Properties - Generally
(12) With the exception of coastal and inland sandy beaches, no person may use or offer for use metal detectors, except with permission from DCR personnel, for the purposes of locating lost personal property.

(DCR being the Massachuestts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

So coastal and inland sandy beaches are ok to metal detect. What is all the argument over?

here is where I got my info:

Thank you so much pulltabfelix, for posting the info.

Baldwin and Owais77 welcome to T Net.
This occurred a few years back, but it could pop back up at any time.
Seems the powers that be don't want we who swing metal detectors finding and removing what they consider antiquity, anything 50 years or older from public lands, even tho we are the public. That and they think we are having way too much fun!

Most rules regarding metal detecting for different cities and towns and places can be googled from their web sites.
A talent beyond me, thus all the help from members.
So we still have the beaches.

I just found out about it don't know why yet, but I'm guessing the powers that be snuck it in under the radar because that's the way they want it A state park I went to last year would only let me detect on the beach not in the woods because I may " dig up a relic 50 years old". We all know that would up set the Eco system, planets, & climate change!

IMHO - it is because of those MD'ers that don't leave the ground the way they found it. To this day - I come across holes in the ground from MD'ers who don't clean up. Such a shame...

Welcome to T Net sdevdutt41!
May you find lots of treasures!

I was told that about the "antiquities" ...I was older than the penny I found :sad5:
I do fill and cover what ever holes I dig. It is a point of pride most times you can't even tell where I have dug.
I realize some may not fill their holes, which causes problems for us.

So, this law is still in effect? I used to live on one of the islands off MA. Pity to hear they decided so be so tyrannical, but makes me happy I left :)
