I?ve been digging in an old park that has had the ground opened up for some project. The work has stalled because it?s been raining and too muddy for the earth moving machines so I have been searching it as often as I can. It?s produced some modest finds including wheaties?a silver Rosie?marbles?bottles?relics and now gold! A 14k gold ring!

Way to go on the gold ring. Your modest finds are a good normal hunt for a lot of us, but the gold ring makes it a great one. I’m not positive, but the bullet in the second picture looks like it might be from the civil war. It almost looks like a Watervliet Arsenal bullet from your picture. I can’t be sure without a better picture and a little more cleanup. If it has ribs in a ring around it it is after 1880. Nice work, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.

Civil War relic hunting was my primary motivation to finally pulling the trigger and getting a metal detector. Living in Des Moines, Iowa though CW sites/relics are not easy to come by so content myself with other areas until I can make that happen. Anyway when I found this bullet I thought in the back of my mind this looks old but since most of the items I have found date from the 1880s to the 1940s I assume it’s more of the post CW period but just in case here is another pic of the bullet cleaned up a bit. The bullet I found is on the right and the bullet on left is a .44 caliber colt pistol bullet I bought from a C w relic dealer. Anyway let me know what you think. I?m no expert, but it does look like a .36 cal. Revolver bullet from the civil war. (Thomas and Thomas #7) It is not an exact match from what I can see in the picture, but I am pretty sure you have a winner. The picture below shows some of that variety that I have found. If you start getting into civil war bullets you might want to get a copy of ?Civil War Bullets & Cartridges? by Thomas and Thomas). Stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.
