This is a site deep in a Pittsburgh wooded park that dates back to 1784. I’ve now hit it 4 times and each hunt is a blast with a bunch of old recoveries. From what I read the original log cabin was the home of an Irishman who received 400 acres after the Revolutionary war. From various maps it looks like the site was occupied through the 1920’s.

I’ve only taken off the 6” coil once since I bought it, and it made the 11” feel like a brick on my Nox. So went back to the 6” for this hunt hitting more roots and vine crevices, but also some super slow sweeping in the hot spot.

Almost 8” down.

Aaaarghhh another tombac teaser.

Here is pretty big flat button with no back mark that has a slight pinwheel pattern. Designs on flat buttons are rare for me.

Here is the handful of old buttons and a nice buckle.

Got another large cent and a Shield Nickel working the roots and vines. Then got a nice shallow 18/18 by a pipe.

The 6” was able to ring up a fatty indian without being masked by the pipe. Here are the old coins.

This is my best Fatty by far, usually they are really toasty.

Finally got some silver out of this site, loads of old coins, but none silver.

I’m pretty sure that is a wild boar tusk. Right on the game path that cuts across the site.

Good luck out there!

Looks promising. Pretty sure a silver coin is hidden somewhere. And yes, you have a wild boar tusk there. Please dry very slowly, otherwise they fall into parts.

The 6” using recovery 8 landed me a half dime that was in a pounded, and I mean pounded public park since the 70’s. It’s a old Rev Fort so you know it’s been pounded. That half dime was 4” down in modern trash and old square nails. 6” is amazing tool.

Your finds are nothing much than incredible. Great job.

Thx for the ID on the tusk. I’ve never seen a wild boar in the woods around here, but they are obviously here. Hopefully they’re not aggressive. I’ve found 14 copper coins from the 1800’s or older at this site. Your right, there has to be some silver hiding somewhere.

Thx Truth! Fun when a new piece of gear pulls some new life out of an old pounded site.

I took my new Equinox with the stock coil to an old airfield (1916) and it grunted up a lot of trash. You've convinced me to swap out for the 6" coil and go back. This is why I come to this forum. Thanks Pa dirt.

Nice recoveries Thad. Looks like that 6 inch coil was a good investment.

Thx. I’ve had most of my luck with the 6” in heavily overgrown wooded areas, sneaking the small coil in tight spots I previously missed. I had some success going super slow in the open areas as well, but really only covering small patches where I had pulled some good finds in the past. Good luck!

Had some time today to research the silver spoons. I found the silversmith mark, looks like T.Perkins was producing silver items in Boston in 1810. I wasn’t able to find any other links to T.Perkins. The mfg date fits the history of the site, but the monogram, which I believe is a “P” does not match the last name of the property owner.

Excellent hunt! The XP Deus is my go to machine as it is so light weight, but I love hunting with the Equinox using the 6 inch coil.

Great post. Thanks for the treasure tale! Those spoons with the p? Is the "p" the family name? Very cool. That buckle is amazing too! I bet there is a colonial era dump on that property and if you can find that... forget about it!!!
