Hello All!

Just finished up and posted my 100th episode on YouTube:

We got a pile of relics, some silver, Civil War relics, and even some gold!

Here are some highlights:

Got a shield nickel with a date for onceβ€”1873!

Dug a sweet sweet silver dime:

We both got some awesome marbles:

I recovered three mid-1800s clay pipes:

I saw this silver thimble peeking out of the ground where it had washed out:

My wife dug this 1840s Blake Folger & Co. button which likely went on a uniform of a worker who worked at their clothing store in New Orleans or perhaps it was an advertising piece. The company lasted until the Civil War, and they are well known in the numismatic community for the hard times tokens produced by the business. Very few of these buttons are known to exist.

I got a low 22 reading and looked down to see gold!

I wonder if it’s a brooch which had a hinged pin on the back. Can anyone ID it? Did they make pins with hinges?

At any rate, awesome hunts and Thanksdigging is almost here :)

Cheers,

Buck

Love seeing your insitue pics of the clay pipe frags and the silver thimble in the dirt. Any dating info on the thimble, love to see a pic of it cleaned up.

Hope you have a peaceful Thanksgiving next week,
Dave

It’s funny you should mention that Dave, because I’m having that thimble restored. It’s unmarked so definitely old. There is only a size stamped (β€œ2”). I’d date it to 1860-70 and likely coin silver rather than sterling

Thanks so much bill, I’m in disbelief at what has been recovered so far, and still a month left. Quite a year.

Best Wishes,

Buck

Thanks for the follow up info BB.
I find it interesting just how many objects were remade/cast using old coin silver in the US. This wasn't a common practice here in Canada, probably due to our lack of silver coinage in the early 19thc.

We had our own coin shortages in the early 19th century here, particularly the period from 1810-39. For this reason I think that most of our coin silver marked items date from 1840-60. After 1860, and especially with the discovery of the Comstock lode out west, America gradually adopted the sterling silver standard prevalent in Europe. After 1870, few coin silver pieces were produced. It blows the mind to wonder what coins were melted down to become silverware, thimbles, and jewelry items. Either way it’s a very cool period in history!

I dug a honker of a gold ring in Sandestin at the beach the last time I was there! I’ll give a shout the next time the wife and I head that way and maybe we can walk a beach or two. 😎
