Got out to a couple new sites for a full day of swinging with two of my hunting partners. First find of the day for me were a few buttons and then popped out the early Royal Artillery button and then the half French 4 Sol from the center of the iron patch...1670s. That set the pace for the rest of the day. Dug a few more buttons and coppers from that site before moving on to the second.

Second site was more scattered but the buttons and coppers were still flowing. Dug the decent George II copper and the French Marines button side by side. Dug a few more coppers and then popped out a mystery copper...smaller than the rest with "MARC" clearly visible. Sent a couple pics to Iron Patch and he was able to ID it as a 1619 1/2 Soldo from Venice. Pretty sure that's the oldest coin I've dug and was able to ID.

Last target of the day was dug as we were leaving the field. This is something I've wanted to dig since I started detecting. A Georgian era toy cannon...in perfect condition!

By far my favorite and best hunt of the year.

19 Buttons (2 Military)
12 Coppers
2 Musketballs
1 (half) Silver
1 AWESOME Cannon!

Wonderful! What great, OLD finds for North America. Must be a site used by French settlers in the 1600s. There should be such sites in my area of Atlantic Canada but I have not found any yet, just Loyalist era and newer.

Yeap, love those cannons.
Good mix of finds/coins.

Do you do what we do & clear all the iron over time?

No...we just work around and through it. The sites are never productive enough to warrant the extra work of clearing the iron.

Your choice to make, I think on the better sites its a catch 22, until you clear the iron the productivity won't rise.

Great hunt.
Congrats on the silver and the coppers.
The cannon is pure eye candy for being an awesome relic-and a big one at that I might add.
The only one I ever found was tiny compared to the one you dug.

Thanks...I was super stoked to finally knock the cannon off my bucket list!

For those not aware, these cannons were actually working cannons that could be fired. I suspect these were more "big boy" toys than child toys.

Great finds! I agree and think that that cannon may have been an adults desktop "signal" cannon and could fire again.

Best hunt of the year, I should say.
After a decade in the hobby a 12 copper day is hard to come by.
I know the cannon is special, but that 1619 coin being your oldest IDable must be quite special too ?

You got three things I never dug in one hunt.
Quantity and quality, it was a great day. Makes me miss getting out there.

Curious if the other two diggers found anything cool.
