Congrats on your Cortal Bell. Do you think if I dream hard enough I might find the right location for my first Bell? LOL

Very nice crotal bell find Jeff, the bronze casing will often help preserve the iron pea inside. The one you found probably dates from 1840 - 70. Some of the earlier examples I've found had the makers initials stamped on the top near the loop or on the bottom where the opening is.

Good, only about 1 in 10 complete ones ring, so you got lucky on the first one.
interesting, all my complete ones ring? wonder if it is just because the ones I find are 1800s where you are finding older ones more often?

Congrats on getting your first Crotal bell, and getting it back in good order.
There's something really special about hearing them jingle again after being silenced for so many years.
Never get tired of digging them, that for sure.

Never had an issue with them not ringing, quite the opposite.
Could it be your soils are disintegrating the steel bead completely?
In the pile of complete ones even from on your side of the pond, ding a ling, a ling.
