Hello One and All!

Well, I finally got out today to the property where I found the GW buttons in 2009. I was working a different part of the property when this popped out of the ground only about 2-3" deep. I'm the first to admit I know nothing about coins, but taking a quick look online, I think it is a King George II Farthing from the 1730s. The date is worn away except for the "7" in 1700s. If I am correct with the date, it is from around the time when the first settlers in this town purchased property from the East Jersey Proprietors...pretty cool. The pictures don't really do it justice. These pictures are scanned...I may try my digital camera later.

Happy Hunting

Re: My oldest coin by far!

Nice! You're right about it being George II, and the time frame, but it's a halfpenny.

Hey IP,
How can you tell its a half penny? The page I looked at had a few varieties and the George bust around the bottom where it is squared off is what brought me to my thought it was a farthing. I'm always trying to learn...please do tell!

The bust is the young head type, and the style of the Britainnia is different for farthings and halfpennies. That's why I didn't have to know the size to know it's a halfpenny.

That GW site is one for the Colonial books. I feel another one is going to pop.

Nice Georgie!

Kirk

Thanks everybody for the kind words! I certainly hope Kirk is right and I can spring another one from its earthly grave!

Happy Hunting!
