My son hit a half penny today and I got a button and a license plate.

Got to the farm site where a old house had been removed around 1920. My 12 year old hit a coin first with the half penny 1844. Talk about proud Dad moment!
I found the button next. On the back it says “Sporting New Design”. Not sure the date on it.
About 10 in deep I found this lisence plate dated 1950. There was a secound one but it was toasted.

Cool finds. "SPORTING NEW DESIGNS" buttons are civilian and usually have some kind of hunting/shooting/fishing imagery (horses, dogs, ducks or whatever). The maker is uncertain but they're believed to be of British origin and c.1850s-1860s.

It’s funny we found a Canadian half penny with a British button on one site.

The 1844 coin is a Bank of Montreal half penny token. The reverse would have the words "PROVINCE OF CANADA" around the top of the building and "BANK OF MONTREAL" around the bottom. I can see the bank building central door columns but not the wording. A half penny is different from a half cent. The US minted half cents but not Canada, as far as I can tell.
