Hey guys I was fishing off the east coast of Australia and snagged a log which has what appears to be gold nails and reminence of sheeting. The timber is really old and highly unusual for the area historically. Any ideas?

That's what brass looks like when exposed to water after a century or so.
Cool recovery though but not gold.

I agree with brass, and or muntz metal fasteners, and sheathing !! Its a beautiful piece for display !! I have a similar piece hanging in my man cave. I washed mine then soaked it in fresh water for a while, then allowed it to dry in the shade, and oiled it with teak oil.....my timber was made of mahogany and was in good condition.

Instead of guessing, I can tell you an easy way to find out what it is: pull one out and take it to a jeweler to have it tested.

Did not know jewelers tested metals other than precious ones. heh

XRF would be the only quick way.

great find, those nails suggest a nautical connection. Not all that recent for sure.

Who knows - you'd have to poll one nail out
Maybe brass, that was soured by the sand and surf...!
