I'm not an expert, but you might have a meteorite. I'd take to your local college. A professor could tell for sure.

let's try this again. Hopefully the real color comes through this time. It's not light for it's size Jeff. Maybe a little heavier than it appears but not alot. There was a rail about three hundred yards from where he found it though, but wouldn't coal burn up if it was heated? ~CO2

Not all of it. ALOT depends on the Impurities. I live in the middle Of the Coal Fields & can attest to that. However I'v never seen Silver Colored Coal, Burnt or Not. alot of IRON ORE around here too, that may be the Cause, But ONLY a Guess, as I think a magnet would stick to it then ... by the way, only 99% of Metiorites are able to attract a magnet. so it could be. . it could also be something that was in with the Coal when Burned in the Locomotive

Googled Hematite and the pics didn't look like this. also checked several other minerals that I could think of and none looked quite like this piece.

We produced a similar looking creation once in a furnice. We were melting zinc and aluminum and the bottom of our steel crucible melted threw and the molten zinc aluminum mix poured out threw the pipe that held the fan. In the pipe formed a crystal glass like material that was shiny metal colored similar to that. Now the stuff that we made was real thin and very brittle but very hard and didnt scratch. Tested it with a cold chisle. Theres a peice of it laying around some where I will try to find it and post a pic. But have dont know it that is what this is.

Looks to me to be a low-melting-point alloy, like rose metal-- a Gallium/Tin/lead/Bismuth alloy. You might take a match to a corner of it and see if it melts. Be careful NOT to breathe any fumes you might generate-- might have Mercury or Cadmium in it!

Looks like a Ball of Tin-Foil in your last Pic. You'r not pulling our Collective Legs here now are ya ?? :D Just Pesting . you may have to take it to an expert, but I'm almost positive it must be some kind of melted metal.

Thanks everybody.? I was hoping this would be all to obvious to someone.? Fact is though, it doesn't burn, when I tried to scratch it, I couldn't.? It doesn't smell when either heated or scratched vigorously.? Took it to a local minerologists store last weekend and owner said he'd never seen anything like it. There are some crystaline structures that didn't show up in any of the photos so will try one more photo.? I live near 2 universities, CSU & CU, and will be taking it to some specialists in one of those locations.? Just wanted to make sure it wasn't something obvious first.? I'll let you all know what I find out.? Thanks for looking and posting~CO2

PS~Not a ball of aluminum foil removed during gall bladder surgery ;D

I'm still looking for the stuff that we made, but haven't been able to find it. When you take it to a college or university ask if they can put it in a mass spectromiter that should tell you what it is made of.
