Was at Nauset Light Beach (National Seashore) on the Cape yesterday morning.

Saw a guy metal detecting on the beach. I thought the National Seashore was off limits to metal detectors.

I approached the guy, to see what he was finding. As I got closer I noticed he was wearing a NS Ranger uniform. What's up with that? I struck up a conversation, he showed me a couple gold rings and lots of coins. I said I've never seen anyone else with a metal detector on this beach.
He was very talkative and mentioned that he hits the NS beaches every day before work and that he finds a lot because he has the beaches to himself. I asked "what do you mean?" He stated that metal detectors are prohibited from NS property, but because he works for the Park Service, he can hunt the beaches with no problem. and I quote "Which is good for me, more stuff to find"

I left without saying anything and called the NS office. The person I spoke to confirmed what he had said. Metal Detectors are prohibited except by special permission from the park supervisor (to find a lost valuable, etc.), which obviously this park ranger has.

SO, the priveleged few can hunt places that the general public can not!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I should get a job with the park service!!!!!!!!!

Ya know, this is just plain wrong. I would video tape him detecting, then go myself. Good, lets go to court!

My resume is already on file! I have access to the Kennedy Space Center beaches. However, metal detectors are not permitted, even by employees. :'(

that is not fair at all...talk about abuse of power... video tape him... and blast it all over everything, news, newspapers.. all of it..that is NOT fair at all..

I mentioned something similar to this in another post. I tried to hunt some state parks and got a no but another MD'er is allowed to hunt the very same place because he is friends and went to school with the park director. This stinks.

You know it would kind of funny to show up while he is detecting and bring your own detector
and a camera crew, and tell him you are going to join him in the hunt. When he tells you can't,
you can ask him why he can do it and you can't,while on camera for all to see.I'd love to hear
his explanation. It would let the public see what these government institutions are doing to
individual rights.A government OF the people,BY the people, and For the people-not a privledged
few.HH Joe

that is also what i would do video tape then get a recorder and go strike up a conversation again with him hidden recorder of course, find out who gave him permission then get in touch with said person and ask for permission and tape record this as well and ask him why peeps cant detect then go to city council and ask to change law or go to the news story. might even consider talking to Gov or high up official. explain the situation. good luck maybe this law can be changed. HH tom
P,S. probably get the head park guy fired but i dont think this is right. Abuse of power in any situation is just not right!

I would call the local papers and the Boston TV stations and notify them of what is going on.

With a bit of luck they will send down a camera crew to interview this guy. If not then suggest they send a helicopter overhead while he's detecting and take pics of him for the news. Can't you just see the headline/storyline "Park Ranger Breaks Federal Rules." It's too bad you didn't get his badge number. Once you have that then there is no place for him to hide.

It's worth a try. You've got nothing to lose, but he does.

If none of that works, take some videos of him and plaster it all over Youtube. You know local stations watch Youtube as they've shown plenty of other news worthy items from there. Good Luck.

UH THAT "SPECIAL PERMIT" IS FOR A LIKE ONE TIME HUNT BY FOLKS WHO HAVE LOST THEIR "PERSONAL PROPETY" --LIKE GEE I LOST MY LOST MY WEDDING RING TYPE HUNT BY FOLKS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO TURN OVER ANYTHING THEY FIND BUT THE "DECLARED ITEM" to the rangers -- not to be abused by the local park rangers scamming the system to line their pockets. --- if their crooked on this wonder if their plundering any shipwrecks or indain artifact sites in the "park" for their profiet

You guys are pretty funny. "Camera Crew, Helicopter, tape recorder, etc." Like anyone who's anyone cares a hoot.

I've seen this type of Government "priveleges" before. Like the cop who's speeding, just to go to Dunkin Donuts.

I imagine if there is a big to do about this, they will just chalk it up to "Official Business".

I bet if GW Bush, Obama, Gov. Arnold or anyone of such stature wanted to metal detect the White House lawn, it would be NO PROBLEM.

I guess I am the only one that sees this differently. He asked and got permission. Remember that is something that we all have to do to get on to some sites. I also have discovered over the years that anything can get done if you have the right paperwork. In Wisconsin it also is against the law to hunt in a state park, unless you have permission from the ranger there. Just ask!

Maybe I'm thinking wrong here, but I'm close to retirement and now I'm thinking about a second career. The heck with getting the guy fired or in trouble. I want to get a job.

I agree with jimb. Whats the big deal other than maybe a little greed goin on. This guy is a parks employee for sure but probably just a regular joe like the rest of us. It doesn't sound like he was rude only a little excited to show his finds and overwhelmed to have the whole place to hisself. To any of us this would be a dream come true. I can't believe that talk of gettin him fired. What has he done to anyone except enjoy the same hobby we do. He got his permission through a channel that is probably not available to the rest of us is all. If ya want to detect on that particular beach get a job with the parks. I am just blown away by all the b.s. goin on. Its like bein back in the sand box. Be happy for the guy instead of trying to figure out a way to jump his claim.

I have always felt that any one that works for the Goverment is a crook and a cheat they break all the rules they hire all their freinds and relatives and go to work to see how little they can do.................

the law is the law for all or else it is just "exploitation" of the masses but the so called "upper crust" -- those who think they are better than the rest of us thus they do not have to play by the rules --I don't mind rules --so long as their fair, and reasonible and applied equally to all.

the ok to MD by permit "loop hole" is for folks who lose a personal item at the park to be able to look for it --its not to allow general hunting its strictly for folks to get their own items back -- by the rules ANY THING THEY FIND except their "personal" item is to be turned over to the park rangers --period--thus the park ranger is breaking the same rules that you would get arrested or ticketed for if you did it --hes abusing the "loop hole" its things like that that can get the loop hole closed so that honest folks who lose something will not be able to hunt for their items in the future. and sorry hes "not" above the law. I gotta go by the law --so do you --why shouldn't he?

I went to Fort Macon in South Carolina back in 2000 (from what I remember I was told that it was an old pre civil war base that was dug into the ground and it was almost invisible from the sea, when the Civil War started it was used, but because naval shells could be lobbed into the base I guess it was of no use to the south), I saw no MD'ng signs all over the place, but I saw a tour guide detecting. Then I went into the visitors center and saw they were selling souvenir bullets and belt plates, small cannon balls, all kinds of stuff. From what I remember the tour guide said that the state sold it back in the 20's to the town for some ridiculously low price, like $100. Now the owners are making a killing!!!

I live in MASS...This pi@#$ me off!!

there's just nothing right about this!! we have to follow the law...but the ones that are supose to enforce the law...do not??? I work in youth corrections...how can we tell these kids to follow the rules ect.???? :icon_scratch: ??? when we see this type of activity over and over!!!!!!!!! it's really sad >:(

if you become freinds so you can hunt with him then if he finally gets busted --you too can get arrested for breaking the law --- try and apply for a lost item "permit " for yourself --just like he did --see if you get one --if you do your good to go just like he is -- but it still a scam to do it that way. -- those permits are meant to allow for folks to find their own lost items --not general detecting ---but if theres a loop hole use it --I never liked the fact we can not enjoy the parks for our use like the other folks get to do --hikers --ok --bird watchers --ok ---fisherman ---ok --- picnic --ok --swimming --ok --- metal detecting --nope

if theirs a loop hole guess you should use it just like "officer" freindly does -- and he can't squak about it because hes doing it himself . --- Ivan

if he can get a "permit" and do it you should be able to get one and do it also (heck everyone who applies for one should then be able to hunt there)---if not no one should be able to hunt there --- because fair is fair -- on public land it should be open for all to hunt or not allowed atvall -- not pick and choose who can or can not as you feel like it . "folks in spots of power abusing their power to line their own pockets " tick me off badly -- their just crooks who abuse the laws and their power to hold back others while they line their pockets .

I must admit I didn't read every single post on this one, but it got me thinking about what I did read. Seems to me the Ranger had an opportunity and took it, just as the "Archies" do. The other part I see is human nature, "his car is bigger than my car"....I want one like his...or some noisy person living near a school yard that decides to call the police every time he see's someone metal detecting in the yard...Are we that jealous or that worried that someone might get to do something that we can't do that we will go so far as making that person's life miserable? C'mon folks, don't be so fast to call out the news crews in situations that you would not win. Maybe, you will end up getting that Ranger off the beach....boy I guess that makes you feel great. Just a thought...jealousy is not a friend that I want to be associated with.

I feel i must reply to this topic again because some peeps might think me selfish greedy jealouse or even hatefull. I just think to abuse one's power is unjust. I didn't say i wanted to get the guy fired I said it would probably get his boss fired if brought to a higher ups knowledge. I personally don't care if he finds a chest full of gold and am glad for him to find the goodies but I still don't like the abuse of power and think it should be reported. It would be like police officers turning on the lights and sirens to get to a donut shop. Abuse is abuse and should not be tolerated
