NC Button ID Help - Thread Still Attached!

Pulled this 2 piece button out, thought it was a coin at first. The front of the button immediately separated and fell to the ground where it broke in half. You can barely touch it without it disintegrating, bummer. Any help with ID would be appreciated. Amazed to see the thread is still attached! Found in very dark sandy soil in Hampstead, NC. Wondering if Civil War era or Colonial? FYI I did just find this a few days ago, couldn't post until I got back to Ohio where my good camera and laptop were. Thanks all!

I don't know anything about buttons, but it sure looks old. Pretty neat that the thread is still there. Hopefully, someone will ID it. Cool find!

What is on the top layer dirt/crust/leather?
Now that is a really cool recovery-pewter would be my first guess and certainly old.

I'm not sure on the top layer, it just crumbles off like rust almost, I think it is / was some type of metal.

Thanks! Quite a frustrating trip. Visiting family in NC and my battery died my first day at the beach. Had to order one which took days, didn't have a back up. By the time it came in I was in another area of NC. Only got to dig for a short time. First hole I dug that day!

Can you make out any of the lettering on the back. It seems odd that a design would be covered unless the owner did it sometime after acquiring it. I don't think it is pewter nor a true two piece button. I think it is a 1 piece that someone covered.

I can't make out any lettering at all which was disappointing. Had it under my best magnifier. I've found other civil war era buttons where I could. This button seems different, so fragile. Do you think it could be colonial?

I agree. I know not to over clean or clean at all depending on the item. Did use a soft toothpick to remove a bit of dirt from the back.

Yes, I was on private property out behind their house in the trees. So crazy that I found it. I look forward to hunting more on that property the next time I visit : )
