Need Help Identifying a Military Relic

I suspect this is a hat pin (I know that's not the proper term) from the civil war era, but I'm not sure. Can someone tell me what the "D" means? and how old this thing is?

Really nice find. The town I live in was used as a staging area for the Confederacy. They would amass artilery, soldiers and other stuff to load on the train and take them to specific areas. I'm hoping to find cool stuff like you did. Congrats

ok: So it's from D Artillery, but can someone out there tell me more about D Artillery? Date? I should mention; I'm in New Hampshire.
