Looks to me like a vintage (sixties/seventies) candle-holder with a modernistic design of the kind that are regarded as design classics these days. I would bet it's Swedish but I don't recognise the signature. It would be worth persevering to try and find the maker since some of these types of item are very desirable to collectors and moderately valuable.

If it is a candle-holder, with that handle sticking out of the side it looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Similar spiked items used be called flower/pin frogs if I remember right.
Though this application is probably as stated a candle.
I agree--the spike pin thing is almost certainly a pin frog used for holding flowers. The residue is from the water/flowers and reaction with the metal. Some were made of lead to provide weight to hold the tall flowers--might explain the white patina.

Very cool piece.

I was thinking a Pipe or Candle holder or Incense Burner
I agree with Gare. Screen in bottom reminds me of some incense burners I have seen. I do not think a candle holder would have that screen. If handle had a hole through it would think some funky wacky backy pipe. I will go with incense.

Hi thanks for the help everyone. The inside comes out. Inside it has little spikes.

Incense or potpourri burner.IMO and thank you for the picture of the stem because I was leaning towards a pipe but since no hole in handle or stem, pipe is out of the running.

Is that actually a screen though? Looked to me like small 'spikes', as you might need to secure a candle.

I may be wrong but still go with a screen. Hey poster, is it a perforated screen or spikes? Settle this. Red's eyes may be better than my old eyes.

It has residual in the bowl. Scrape it lightly and see what it smells like. I am a starting to wonder about drugs but still go with incense.
