How large is the cemetery? Might be a row marker or something to do with grave site ID. I used to dig up GAR grave markers about that size.

Very small. Most are unmarked. Only about 20 are marked. The newest is 1850s the records show the oldest is 1600s. It's an old burial ground of just a few select families, Indians and slaves. It's well recorded. I've seen burial markers at cemeteries but this is more an old neighborhood site that was abandoned by the city in 1836 and left to the families.

Is there a church nearby? Sometimes pews or seats were marked in churches from years ago, and families would rent the pews or boxes. Maybe your local museum or historical society would have some insight on it.

Very small. Most are unmarked. Only about 20 are marked. The newest is 1870s the records show the oldest is 1600s. It's an old burial ground of just a few select families, Indians and slaves. It's well recorded. I've seen burial markers at cemeteries but this is more an old neighborhood site that was abandoned by the city in 1836 and left to the families. Small family plots mainly. The history is well recorded. Records go back to 1700 but it sits about a thousand feet directly in front of thus 1658 house that is no longer standing. I found it around 25 years ago. It might have been dropped during some ceremony but not more than a 150 years ago because it wasn't deep at all and has a inset screw hole. Why just one I don't know. It looked like this when I found it but the grounds have been cleaned up.

Maybe something to do with an early telephone system? Pole marker? Phone number?

I believe that is a numbered door plaque, either a house street or apartment number.
