So I did a little more cleaning and at first some said L& Tomes but I am seeing different letters I will point out what I see in case it is difficult for the viewers.

So I see a *L& after that is a blank spot but off camera could be a M it is what I am seeing let’s just keep that in mind. Then there is a blank blank(possibly 2 spaces) and you can slightly see the bottom hook of a Capital “L”or a “E” I would think. And then a definite “I” blank(1 space) and a “P”. Possibly 3 blanks later a obvious “O”. Also I’m not 100 on the “M” but it could be if it helps you guys.

Any button experts can help me solve this?!
Also there is this stuck on muck that is solid in some parts that will not scrape off what would you recommend ?

Hard to say. May want to try taking a toothpick to the crusty parts. I can't quite make out what it says. But likely early-mid 1800s time frame.

You do know it's a Lewis & Tomes button, right?
I'm pretty sure the one word is "Double" as in "Double Gilt".
I will see if I can find it in one of my books.

I see what you posted but what about the letters what would fill in the blank? Because T or tomes doesn’t make sense. If there is a I and a P in there

I know it’s double but there are many other L & (someone else) are you saying they only used the words double gilt? My main reason for the post is for someone who is experienced to fill in the blanks of the spaced out letters. Even if it is L&T what common words are on buttons that have either a E or L following by a P then a few spaces and a O. That is my question. With your knowledge can you make out something with what I am putting out? I am just making sure your seeing what I am seeing and if you look at full image gilt/plate doesn’t fit in there only Double and then something follows after L&’. The last arrow from the left is a hook on a L or E

I looked through about 80 pages of one of my button books. For the most part Lewis & Tomes used "Extra Gilt" a lot.
There were a bunch of terms used on the gilt buttons backs like:
Extra fine, Standard, Imperial, Double, orange, Supreme, etc.

Hmm ok just so I don’t seem crazy you see the letters I am pointing out they are there correct? Thanks for your info idk why those letters are there. And why they don’t add up. I added a picture for you

Ok, I see what you are saying. At first I thought it was Lewis and Tomes but after looking in my book today I didn't see any of their backmarks that were just abbreviated Lewis with an "L".
Let me rel@@k at everything. Now you got my curious.

Are you able to write on a piece of paper what letters and spaces you see in order and post a picture of that?
Give it your best shot at least.
It may make it easier since you get a better look.
Thanks

I wrote that in the original top post. Re read it carefully it will explain everything and how many spaces between. If you really need me to I will redo it all over

So far the closest I've found under "L" was this one.
It has the " * L & " but that's about it.
I wonder if that "O" off by itself could be a capital "C" as in "Co." ?
So it would read:
*L& (something) Co.
Double (gilt perhaps)

Still trying to find anything with "* L &" at the start.

It’s just a flat button but no one can find out what is in the blanks of the letters I drew arrows to. Mystery. You know it could be a C and I am thinking it’s a O. I will check it out again tonight.
