That's an 1839 head of 1838. It's worth a bit, especially since is appears to be a brown color. VF condition is $75 or so. That probably won't get an VF (XF) grade though.

thats waht i thought it was, its been bugging me. for the grade i was thinking at least F possibly VF

I'd put my money on F :)

Agree on the coin attribution, it is a Noe 2 Head of 38 type Rarity 2. Common
( On a scale of 1-8, with 1 being very common)

Fine at best for grade

Note: There are 15 varieties of the 1839, Noe 1 thru Noe 15

A few places to get rarity, right now I am using a book called UNITED STATES LARGE CENTS 1816-1839 by WILLIAM C. NOYES That is THE book for attributing the varieties for those years and it gives rarity rating.

Also, use this website, which is an excellent guide to help in a few cases: http://www.coinfacts.com/

And you can get current auction prices by joining for free any of the major coin auction firms, I use Heritage and it is pretty good site to look at current coins being offered, but I enjoy going into the archives and see more on what sold, when, how much , and what condition they were in.
