Need help with identifying bronze item.

I'm not sure if this is a lamp base or what. No maker marking or base has me puzzled. Any ideas?

I was told that it had been in the house where I found it this weekend for well over 100 year's. Weather that's true or not, it does appear to be Japanese or Chinese in origin.
