I do not think it is old but what do you think. Says France on it. I do not think it’s a shoe buckle although it is the right size

Hello, this is a antique French boot buckle.

I attached something similar as a fastening system and not as a model. There are many models created. Some simple ones like the one you found. Others made of expensive materials and with elaborate models.

Your model in particular is created for boots that's why it is flat and not curve, positioned at the top of the boot where the buckle does not need to be bent as found in the shoe buckle.

Thank you for the reply. My guess is that it isn’t that old. Also I found it in the backyard of a house built in the 1920’s. What year you think maybe 30s 40s?

Yes, of course. It can be right. It's hard for me to know exactly just by looking at the pictures.
I was referring to the style and not the actual year of manufacture.
After thinking more, I've found that the buckle looks very much like Pilgrim Hat Buckle. What do you think?

We thought so too, but the buckle is straight and not curved like a shoe one. I see that the resemblance to a hat buckle is more likely. :) What do you think?
French "cut steel buckle"... regardless of the application which would be guessing at best unless an exact example could be found.

This is for you to carry on with if you would like :)
