when i got into water hunting - for a long time i was hitting fresh water spots for awhile
one of the first times i hit a salt water spot - i didnt know to check the tides
most salt water spots are 1 1/2 hrs plus away from me
I remember running out and detecting for a couple of hours and only came up with a few pennies
took a break for lunch and when i came back the water was out about 50 yrds
and it kept going out - i had hit it at high tide and i had been hitting where the wet sand hunters
had hammered it - learned not to do that again :tongue3:

if you are there at low tide you are several hours late for a few reasons:

1) Everyone else is already there detecting
2) Sand is dropped on the bank as the tide goes out
3) Chasing the tide out is easier than trying to rush it as it comes in.

Check the "apps" for your cell phone(s)... you can usually find a "tide app" that you can use anytime, directly from your cell phone.

I like and use the "Tides Near Me" app on my iPhone.

Tide charts are Ok but if you really want to know what is going on in realtime....use NOAA Tide & Currents.. then watch winds and weather (windy.com) .. "Realtime" is what it's all about, not a tide chart that was made years ago. I've seen Tides specially up bays and rivers be totally blown out when the regular tide chart gave no clue of

Someone sent me this picture today of a unpredicted extreme lowtide

Excellent advice.
Do not forget the moon phase as well. New and full moon pull the hardest in many areas.

Tide, wind, moon phase and liklihood of lost treasure. On my part of the east coast, the beach lies in an almost NW to SE orientation. For us a strong N wind erodes faster and I have found a strong S wind for several days throws up other good finds. However, a tropical storm, noreaster, hurricane or just high waves for more than 48 hours will erode the beach regardless of wind direction. This is the view from my c&c, your mileage may vary.

Terry and those above have the best advice, when it all lines up it can be great.

Happy Hunting!

OBN, thanks for passing the tip and link along. I can definitely see how knowing the wind direction can be helpful.

Tide is ONE aspect of MDing during "low tide". I find wind direction (esp storm direction) as well as whether there is high pressure or low pressure system overhead contribute significantly in getting me as far out into the surf as possible (w/o scuba gear). When these line-up I have my best days.
