Bought the new Equinox 900 to replace my well worn 800. Saw a number of videos saying the 900 was superior to the 800 but I always wonder if this is mostly market hype. Got to test it yesterday at a local site me and others have hit many many times. First noticed 900 is very quiet until a target shows up. 800 was always making some kind of racket. Found a US large cent braided hair in decent condition first 5 minutes I got there! Only had about a hour to hunt. Next found a unusual shaped dandy button that rang loud and clear. I know that me or others would have scooped both of those targets long ago. Two more buttons found and a musket ball before my hour was up. Looks like I will have to revisit my better sites in the past. I was running in Field 1 on max sensitivity. Recovery speed 3. Not doing a promo for the 900. Thought I would just post my first results over my old trusty 800.

Sounds great man. Nothing better than a large cent although in 31 years of metal detecting I’ve never found one even though I’m already hunting a existing 1830’s homesite, only downfall with these detectors is lack of ability to discriminate those pesky square nails

Can I ask what modes and or basically a detailed analysis on your setup? I hunt mostly for that stuff and I can’t get it to work for me right

I'm am basically hunting on a sand bar called Cape Cod. Almost no top soil and mostly loose sand. Not sure if that is your situation where you are located? But over the last few years, I found my swing speed is really most important. When I first started hunting I tried to cover as much ground a possible in a short period of time. I now have revisited all these older areas I have detected and take much more time walking way slower. It's amazing all the targets I missed! Yes, some of it is the new 900 but much more is not being in such a rush. I prefer Fields 1 or 2. Full 28 sensitively. 3-4 recovery speed is fine as I am moving slow across the ground and computer has more time to respond. Hope this is of some help. Bill

Just started learning the 900 too. The 800 just felt unfinished to me but all the improvements in the 900 are nice. I live in NY and my dirt is very mineralized, my yard is super trashy with square nails and such, so I’m struggling to get the hang of balancing the settings. So far I keep my sensitivity at 24, iron bias at 2 and recovery speed at 5. There are so many signals everywhere but I’ve learned to tell the difference between solid signals and junk. I switched from an AT Gold and wow, what a difference. I do miss the Gold but the 900 is definitely an improvement for me. I’ve tried my wife’s AT Max…it’s okay but I guess it’s a personal preference thing.

Which detector are you using? Not sure my soil is like yours. I live basically on a sand bar that sticks out into the ocean. Spots with deep rich soil are pretty rare. I switched over from the Equinox 800 to the 900 early this year. Just finally getting use to it.
