Funny you should ask.

Sunday, my better half (not just yet) and I had breakfast at Charlies Chili next to Newport Beach Pier on Balboa Island then spent an hour or so MD'ing around the Dory Fleet. The beach was so torn up due to the recent storms we didn't have much luck.

However, late May or early June should show improvement and heavier usage.

If you have an opportunity, eat at the Crab Cooker thats opposite the pier...great seafood and the best chowder south of Seattle.

What do you need? A hat, sun screen and dark glasses...The hats for shade, the sun screen to protect against the UV's, and the glasses are so your wife won't see you scamming the chicks.

A word to the wise, its best to look straight ahead and rotate your eyes only.............

Sorry, I got side tracked. Be sure to bring your toys.

Ahhhh, you guys are killing me! I moved from sunny Long Beach (just north of Newport) to Idaho about 8 months ago & just got my first detector less than a month ago. It kills me to think that I lived a few blocks from the beach for 17 years & never swung a coil for booty! I used to fish the Newport jetty & do the charter trips from Davies locker on a regular basis, and yes.........the beer is cold & the food is great! You might try going just a little bit north to Huntington Beach Pier area, lots of traffic there, & just a little further north to Bolsa Chica. It is a large camp/RV area that I bet would be a gold mine! As you may be able to tell I am a little bit homesick, especialy since getting this detector as I am thinking of all the great places I could be hunting. If you feel like a drive try Malibu, lots of surf traffic, probably more than Huntington. Or Santa Monica beach, around the pier, tons of traffic & tourists=lots of clad & jewelry! I gotta stop before I start to cry! lol Good luck & please post & tell us how you do! :'(

Sunglasses are a must and step ahead of wife when you eyeball the Thongs so wife won't see the eyes bug out from the side.

Your detector will handle the wet sand too, but watch out for wet and black sand together. You'll have to retune going from dry sand to wet. You'll get very deep with Super Tune at the beach and be able to hear the +14 inch tiny charms.

Good Luck,

Don't stare at the "Jarheads" in Speedos.

Laguna Beach is also known as San Francisco South...Jar Heads in speedo's are not trolling for babes.

The more active and populated Beaches begin at Newport and Huntington Beach and extend northward to Seal Beach and Long Beach. Santa Monica is also a hot spot...and as said, more of a tourist area than the more southern beaches.

No black sand though...all pristine and white.

Most beaches are periodically cleaned with large scrapers...you need to find where they are parked or emptied.

Be extremely careful for high bacteria warning signs, especially at Huntington and Santa Monica...sewer outfall pipes commonly break...Sewer Trout (floaters).

From now til mid-October, the entire southern coast is like a continual spring break ;D

Enjoy the sun, fun, southern California hospitality, and of course, the great views ;D

Will take a raincheck on the brew...don't drink any more (or any less, for that matter).

As to Laguna, my geographic limit is Mid-county Newport after an occassional Sunday breakfast at Charlie's Chili Shack by the pier.

The Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival is great once a year...ever wondered whats hidden under the sawdust?

Also curious if anyone has ever checked out Avalon Harbor Beach on Santa Catalina Island?

Big tourist area...all those eastern and mid-westerners in their street shoes and plaid shorts trying to look like locals. ;D
