I haven’t detected much in the last few years, but recently got the bug. I managed to pull this yesterday at one of my old sites. I can’t find the exact match, but looks to be commissioned officer button used from Rev War to maybe War 1812 also. Any extra info is much appreciated. Just a trace of gilt left…

Is there a backmark? The closest match I can find in Albert's book is BNH4 on page 90. It is a British Captains button 1774-1787; 1-piece with a blank back.

There is no backmark, I was hoping someone with Alberts would chime in. From what I have read the US navy officers wore the same buttons. Does Alberts have a picture of anything different for the Continental Navy officers up to and including 1812? Thanks for your help…

Here are the US Navy buttons shown in Alberts and the similar British ones. There were a few more US ones but they are nothing like your button.
As you can see the BNH-4 is the closest match to yours.

Thank you for your help! I just ordered a used Albert’s which I wanted the last time I was heavy into detecting 10 years ago. Finally pulled the trigger!

I have three copies but all have sentimental value to them. The one I use was given to me by my next oldest brother and I have just about worn the spine cover off of it. The other two belonged to my brothers and I inherited them. It's hard to let any of them go.
