Nice Point!

Rock found this beautiful point today on a joint hunt with me and my brother. We are in the northwest Georgia area and this was found on a gravel bar. No pottery in this area - personally I would not know if I did find a piece of pottery, but Rock knows his pottery and he didn't see any. The stem appears broken. Any ideas on the type or age?

I have to admit your creek is a tough hunt with all the the cobbles dark like the flint. I saw no quartz but so much slate which they usually go hand in hand in creeks around my area. The Chert point looks to be the same material as the square knife you found so they might be from the same period. Seeing there was no pottery found I would guess the 2 finds would fall into the older Morrow Mountain period around 7000 B.P.
But if somebody else has a better idea I hope they will respond. It was fun and I enjoyed every minute of the hunt. This is the first member hunt I have been on, rock

It was a pleasure and yes I will come back after a good rain and creek washing. Id be interested in seeing how the creek flowed after a good down pour. Got to be more than just 2 pieces of flint there.
I love the color of your flint in your area with that brownish tint along the blade. You should post the 2 together side by side so everyone can see the material for comparison as the flaking and design.

I did want to point out the fractures on the point as to how they will show up on a artifact after tumbling through a creek. Some creeks due to water clarity wont stain all flint to a dark color like those but as they tumble and hit gravel they will show fresh fractures on a old piece. They look good.

Nice finds, sounds like a good time. That is some nice material. like how can make out all the flaking on it. Wish we had it around here.

One more thing for BearCreek in your creek if you notice all of the slate which is a lighter weight will sit on top of the gravel bars. The heavier pieces like flint and quartzite materials which are heavier will rest under the slate on the hard pan. Pottery will rest on top with the slate if you ever find any. Pottery wasnt being made till 2000 B.P. but most shows up at 1500 B.P. to 500 B.P. in my area. So your creek might be to early for the pottery if the Woodland people werent there.
