Spent 1.5 hrs in the morning exploring some cropmarks, I had a feeling they were Bronze Age & with no finds & any other signs, I left with just 1 button & the end of a riding crop. At least one off the list

After lunch I went back to the No.1 field (on my own) to continue where I left off. About 1.5 hrs into the hunt I got a hammered which I didn't reconsize but suspected was Viking. I'm now 99% sure its:

Danish East Anglian
Circa 895-910
St.Edmund Memorial Penny
with blundered legend. Needs research, not sure if its a known blunder, but only 94 recorded examples. :headbang: :occasion14:

Also got a Charles II hammered Penny (circa 1660s), 7 Roman Coins, 2 17th C Tokens, 2 Lead Tokens & a nice Silver 18th C cufflink piece :)

Never had any Viking coinage until this year when I got a cut Cnut & now in the same year this one :o
(6 hours total hunt time today)

Sorry, I missed this mate :tongue3:. You are getting some great finds off your fields recently. I love the St Edmund, shame it's damaged, great find all the same . I'd definitely hit that area hard next time :laughing7:

Five replies before mine ::) This is what keeps us(UK) going out in all weathers, to find a coin just like this :headbang: Fantastic Mate :notworthy:

You are having a great year Cru, I don't think I will be posting any of my finds this season, the work that goe's in and the responces you get, don't make it worth the effort , your replies to this Rare find, just endorces it....

In case anybody's interested, this coin would be like finding a Pine Tree Shilling in America. And should be on the Banner, even though it's incomplete >:(

Not to worried, at least some of us get it. When I found it, I GPSed it as Saxon Penny, thought it was an early & rare one as I could not remember it well. As the session continued, it started to dawn on me that its more likely Viking, it was then hard to stay in the field as I was itching to know :laughing9:

As course, this is crazy logic, as I would have like to see it complete, but it lowers the price tag & means we don't owe the farmer so much or need to equally it with another rare item for his growing collection.

Re: No.1 Field - Day 9...UPDATED ID ON RARE COIN

UPDATE:

'Early phase of the St Edmund Memorial coinage, before the Cuerdale hoard (c. 905). The moneyer's name VLBER[ ] is quite clear, but this might be a variant of the name ODVLBERT, which is appears on many coins in the Cuerdale hoard in various forms. I could not be certain that this is new reading as there is no recent comprehensive listing of them.'

If your interested as I am in the History (read above). I couldn't work out why (although I did second guess it) the setlled Anglo-Scandinavians (Vikings) where minting coins that celebrated the life of a Saxon King that they tortured to death :icon_scratch: Well, even in the short 30 years after Edmunds death when this coin was minted they had started to convert to Christianity :icon_thumright:

I now find this coin even more fascinating 8)

Good imfo Cru :icon_thumleft: The Viking were also fasanated by Saxon Culture and Art, including the Silver Coins, Thousands have been found in countries like Norway Sweden ect, these coins were paid to Viking raiders. King Aethelred "The Unready" was advised by Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury and the aldermen of the south-western provinces to buy off the Vikings rather than continue the armed struggle.

Yeah, Dad & I read up on this when we got a couple of Aethelred's coins. I forget the amounts but it was more than the total national debt that ended up being given, & it bankrupted the country (as you know they kept coming back & then asking for even more). More of his coins turn up (are discovered) over sea's than in the UK :o
