Hi everyone, I haven't metal detecting for a week bit something odd happened today with pocket change at Walmart, I was about to put my loose change at my jar at home when I noticed a fadeout face on a nickel. Is this a mint error? I figured roll hunters on this forum could help me out? On the pics I used flash seems to say 1945 or it's my sight playing tricks on me?

most likely post-mint damage. It looks like it came in contact with some chemical or something - someone else here may know exactly. As for the date, it can't be a 1945 because those would have a large mintmark on the back above the dome of Monticello. From 1942-1945, nickels were made with 35% silver in order to preserve nickel for the war - and in order to identify those coins, the mint moved the mintmark to that location. hope this helps.

This looks like a classic example of a capped die error to me. This happens when a coin is stuck on one of the dies, covering it.
As CJ9 mentioned, it's not a 1945, because that would be silver. The reverse on this one looks much more modern. Put it a flip and save it. It's worth a whole lot more than a silver war nickel!

I've never found a capped die nickel, but here are two pennies I found.

Thanks for the info Chuck. Was thinking of selling it on ebay but if it's worth something I'll save it. In the pic it shows where I thought to see a 45....just wishing...but it's a good find for pocket change anyways...😁....those are nice pennies....congrats and thanks.

You can search the sold listings on eBay to get a good idea of value. There are several stages of capped dies (early, mid, late), but I'm sure you'll find a few that look similar to yours.
