This makes an Interesting subject, more interesting would be the documents concealed in the chest!!

How is your research coming along on the above?

1. Did the ship exist?
2. What became of the ship during WWII?
3. What happened to the ship while on waters?

Research documents are difficult to come by on this subject, Byron wrote as much as he could to shed light on the matter without conclusive evidence.

Is it real - Yes!

There where 2 seydlitz's one was a battle ship. Other is the mail steamer. Battle ship caught fire. Mail ship was damaged and seized. I have been researching it for the last yr. And i also made a trip to balina. But i was only there a few hrs. Would like to get back and go through the old archives now i know where they are. It amazed me the public library and the maritime museum didnt hold any of the old microfech films. I did get the address of an old place that did have them. But didnt get there

Hi Marticus, Below is the original story I scanned for you from Author Kenneth W Bryon, book Title: Lost Treasures in Australia and New Zealand

img051.jpg

The Interesting thing in researching this Ballina Treasure is that, the ship "Sedlitz" is specifically mentioned in the above story, I managed to trace an article in England stating this ship was in fact in Sydney
and left just prior to the war. A certain person also mentioned this information to me, and also mentioned that there weren't any records of this ship entering or leaving Sydney, but there was a ship
named "Seydlitz", in which I located records for this ship entering Sydney and departure and it's other routes from Sydney to Queensland as shown below.

Also Find below an original newspaper clipping regarding the Ballina Treasure Story

I'm curious, so after reading Byron's story and the name of the ship he has mentioned as "Sedlitz" what made you look at a ship named "Seydlitz"?

A friend of mine mentioned the same thing, given my research I have not found any shipping documents at present regarding the ship "Sedlitz" other that a london newspaper archive, I also have had email correspondence with German Maritime archives stating that just prior to and during the war alot of documents were either hidden or destroyed in fear of the Nazi's.

Searching shipping records in Germany and here in Australia, i have managed to accumulate shipping documents on the ship "Seydlitz" that correspond between the German manifest with the Australian Manifests, I also have detailed Passenger lists.

The only thing with all the documents i do have is the ship "Seydlitz" never arriving or departing Sydney prior the war in 1914, this make it difficult to assume this ship "Seydlitz" being the ship in question, having said that the evidence swaying towards the ship named "Sedlitz" is becoming more compelling as being the correct ship. Byron was a researcher, he wouldn't just make up a bogus ship, and London newspapers wouldn't just invent a ship nor would the Australian newspapers at the time.

Question remains, why are the records of this ship "Sedlitz" kept a secret.

Good collection you have, let discuss more on this topic! Treasure Hunting is never boring!

regards

I first came across it from a treasure hunting/metal detecting website called treasure enterprises.com.au then started looking for more on it. I only got byrons book last year. It took a while to get hold of. And the only copy i got was from the u.k. another guy Greg Jefferys who has the strade broke galleon website. I have spoken to him and got alot of info off his site on the subject also. But as he mentions and i have found. The boat is refered to by the same name. Slightly different spelling. Weather or not that being people at the time trying to get a story. Seydlitz or seidlitz. The true name of it is thr Seydlitz, norddeutscher Lloyd steamship. Another good site i came across was. Www.searlecanada.org/volturno/volturno93.html

I dont think its a secrete as such. I just think its a sign of the times. Just days before world war one. Then it was probably hastily keep away by either the gov or german personel. The earliest story i have found so far on the treasure is the jan 9 sydney morning herald news on the search fails for treasure trove again. Which i find a bit sus. Why would sydney have the breaking story on something that happened in balina/ north coast. So im hoping on another trip to balina area for a longer stay i might be able to track down some original news paper docs from before that. At least then it would verify the story. Im still on the fence as if it was true or not. Yes the boat was real and left early. But heading north and burrying treasure to come back. Could it have been someone just making up a story and using that as the reference i wounder. But if it is real and burried. One would think they would pick a spot out of sight. Easily accessed by boat in relitvely calm waters. They would have also needed a reference point. Like a key structure. Or rock or something. A balina local did tell me of 3 sea caves south of evens head might be of interest. But you would think if its something of that value. They would have taken care and put it further up away from the water to a safer place.

Hi Marticus,

First of all thank you for sharing your information on the subject and also the links to sites.

On the site above i found this interesting " On Aug. 3, 1914, with WW1 in progress, she fled Sydney, Australia for South America."

my question - Is there any documented proof in the way of shipping records that lists the name of this ship to the mentioned date leaving Sydney, and a passenger list to accompany it.

Thanks in advance

Regards

The department of state records i think its called may have them. Im hoping anyway. There in syd. Im yet to get there though. Im also looking into the pilot station records. Might shed some light also. Theres also the fredom of information act too. But not sure what to enquire about as of yet. The original docs being over 100yr old. Im not sure if they would still exist or be availble. Yes she docked in valparalso on the 28/8. So a 25 day journey. Which is do-able. I also came across reports of possible sightings. Woolongong and balina/evens head. But havny been able to get hold of lighthouse keepers records.

If you manage to get hold of the lighthouse keepers records you might solve some mysteries.

No! Unfortunately, I don't get to watch TV that much at present. Sounds Interesting though.

Ive been searching around. Another problem im having is determining the accual colour of the ships funnel. Either red or yellow. Im yet to make a clear answer. Which will help the search. But i really think i need to make a few day trip to balina and surrounds to get some more research on this

This is a very interesting topic, very long time to research in depth, but that is as far as i go on this topic, many people researching on this topic as well, like any treasure story proving facts is sometimes difficult.

I found this today, newspaper article having both "Sedlitz" and "Seydlitz" in the same story which indicates that it's the same ship.
