I'm not sure...a lot of the pottery here (southern NY/Pennsylvania border) is orangish on one side and blackened on the other....the orange or brown side is either smooth or sometimes you find an imprint made by rope...

It doesn't look like pottery and it is awful thick too. Blown up looks like a kind of sediment.
