ODDITY of concave FLAT BUTTON - RICH COLOUR

[SOSDIVING]

This site was a Native American lookout point and hunting site and later in the 1700's into the 1800's was used as a colonial picnic site for its unique location and environmental characteristics of a stream, water fall, and granite outcrops. This site has yielded late 1700's buttons, silver reale, and early artifacts. This unique button was found, and is CONCAVE with RICH COLOUR on the back of the button, the shank is missing and measures 16mm, 3.3 grams, or 0.110 oz. From the many flat buttons I have seen most are flat, or concaved inward versus outward. You would think that this concave button is actually more ergonomically correct. The spelling of RICH COLOUR indicates of British manufacture, imported to the United States. The majority of buttons from this site were all British manufactured, but is interesting to see an oddity of the bowl shaped button. Have not seen many of these documented.

Interesting button. I've not dug any with that shape. Looks like hand and footholds on that boulder (?) Must have been the lookout rock.

Interesting. As you said in your post most of the dug ones are convex as opposed to concave. Not sure of an ID but it looks like a one piece. Nice find.

I have one somewhere that I dug from a 1700's fort site. Not sure where I have it stored at the moment, but it's just like that one.

Great stuff, SOS...sorry, no help on the button...it is cool tho and I'm sure an eagle-eyed Tnetter will get the i.d. spot on. Intrigued by the Native American "ladder" made into the stone wall...there is one of those in town here, this area was big for harvesting sandstone and it's actually in town, covered up by time, trees and ivy. I've dug a couple of those. Likely date 1800-1820, perhaps as late as 1830. London mfg.
