Old Axes and Hoes

I am getting some iron relics ready to clean and hot wax, so thought I would share them with you before cleaning.

Item #2 I am 99% sure was Civil War, I found it at a Redoubt, about a foot deep outside the Redoubt walls. I think item #3 is also Civil War but not so sure. I found it in at the edge of a farm field where the 5th Ohio camped guarding the Loudon Tennessee Railroad bridge. The other items could be Civil War era or any time after. Found them in farm fields near Civil War camps, but still working farms.

That number 4 head looks very much like a pattern done in Rochester NY by D.R. Barton. They were a large scale maker that is well known for their axes and woodworking tools. They had several makers marks over the years (1832 -1880 and also 1874 -1880 D.R. Barton Tool co) due to many partnerships and a second company after selling out the first.

Even if the makers marks near the poll is gone quite often you will find an M4 OR M5 on the cheek of the axe.

Sorry, partner. I cannot make out anything on it. It was in the ground for a very long time. Looks like good metal. I could likely sharpen it and still use it. Although I would never do that. I already hot waxed it after these pictures. But thanks for thoughts and looking.

Number one is likely a adze, not a hoe.

You are exactly right. Good observation. I should have identified it as such in my thread heading. I appreciate you pointing that out. Thanks.

I found this pic axe and a sixty foot shaft that was backfilled in arizona. I think it's from the victorian era. It has 2 makers marks. One is AJI think is for Jesuit. And the other has 3 letters that I can't see the third letter. I think it's a K, H, or R. The f has an arrow pointing to the anchor. Don't know what that's for.any help would be appriciated

Kinda scared afraid to mess it up like I’m pretty sure I have a piece of the original Peralta stones!! But I’m scared to mess it up so I try not too mess with it to much
