Old Buckle and 20mm Dummy Round

Hello, my name is John. I have just purchased my Whites DFX and Whites Beach Hunter ID, which I love both machines. I found this old buckle in a field behind a church next to RR tracks, about 8.5 inches deep. Earlier that morning I found the 20mm dummy round from WWII on Captiva Island, FL. I found it 20 inches deep in chest deep water, almost thought I would have to get some scuba gear. Captiva was used as a target range in WWII by the airforce. I would like to get more information on both items. It would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Buckle photo shows front and back, it is 1 3/4's by 1 5/16 and made of brass. I beleive the circles could have held some type of jewel, with little flowers in between.

20mm Dummy round, found on Captiva Island, FL. It has text stamped in the side that reaads "FU7 Dummy M50" or "FJ7 Dummy Round" 2 1/4 inches tall by 1 1/4 in diamiter and weights 2.2 oz

Boy, the 'dummy round' has me puzzled. Did you clean it? It looks like fresh lead, and if this was lost underwater circa WWII, I would expect it to be greyish white from corrosion. I might hazard a guess that it could be the weight part of a fishing lure. But I know very little about this so don't be discouraged.

The buckle is interesting. I am confident the holes were for rhinestones-- the give-away is the conical backs, and there are no stones, indicating they were glued in (as opposed to 'set', where tiny metal clamps would hold them in place). The glue dissolved over time, and the stones fell out as a result. They might still be in your hole! Very nice piece; my first impression was that it was for a hairdo.

I just rinsed it off under warm water, but as it sits is the way I found it. It was under 20 inches of sand and I was already at chest deep water. There was a couple of barnnicles on it, but was not encrusted. Captiva was a target range in WWII, I was just glad it said dummy on the side of it and not a live round, would have done some damage to me if it went off in my apron :shock: . I found it using my Whites Beach Hunter ID, I am starting to figure the machine out, not so licky on jewelry with it but gatting alot of clad and those real fancy budwieser ingagment rings. I have been following the treasure hunting scene for about ten years, but untill a month ago did I have the money to buy my first detector, Whites DFX, then acouple weeks later after seeing my friends having a bunch of fun and thier finds in the water I had to get me a Whites Beach Hunter ID. I have been researching tons of sites here in SW Florida, now I am getting permission to hunt the land, civil war forts, long lost schools that have been gone since the 40s. I have tons of research, now I am putting it to use.. Well I am going to stop babbling and see what other trouble I can get into :lol: . Happy hunting to you all,

Hello again, John.

SW FL? I was just in Florida a few months ago. Stayed with friends in Homestead; drove to Key West, and also to Tigertail beach. Did the most detecting at Tigertail, where I found a dime, a penny, and some of those fancy Budweiser rings. I was really hoping for a doubloon or reales coin, but no such luck. In Key West we visited a nice beach near the Fort there. I asked a Ranger about detecting, and was told that the Fort is off limits. Also was told that anything found in the water belongs to the State. I guess you better turn in your dummy round, if that's true. Someday I may get back out there to hunt again. If you learn that the laws are different than what I was told, I'd appreciate knowing about it. Thanks!

You could be right, if so, who are you going to contact to turn your dime and penny and budweiser rings into, please let me know. I am not one to bash a new person on the post, but if that is what you want to do, I can take it. I am in this hobby because I enjoy finding stuff and love history. I was just posting my finds because they were interesting to me, and thought it would be the same for other detectorists. I really appreciate your post and looking forward for more. I am new to the hobby but been interested in it for 15 years, and just got the machines I wanted and a couple of great friends along the way. And if that is the case about finding things, then everyone that uses a metal detector to find stuff should have to turn everything that they have found in to the state as well, I am in this for the fun and the history of my finds and if I was working an area that required me to turn everything in I would because I am in the hobby for the fun not personal gain. I want to appologize to the other detectorists that is reading this post if it offends you, I mean no harm and only trying to have fun with my new hobby. Good hunting to you all.
