Called a Dutch penny used in NYC in 1700s

Nice purchase!

A little "historical perspective" by me:

The VOC logo is that of the Dutch "East Indian Company" (hence "Dutch Penny").
This was one of the first "multinational corporations", if not The first one could say, and active all over the world.

Here are some pictures from an agenda-calendar I own that commemorates the East Indian Company, featuring the VOC logo on the company's coat of arms, a ship and check the "account" book on the table of the nice gents with the feathered hats that made up the chamber of commerce and probably handled this kind of coins...
