🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Old pottery or a type of rock?

Not sureif I found a rock or some kind of old pottery. Found it by a river What is in between it looks almost like sediment from the river solidified.

I'm nothing even close to a mason, but it looks to me like a lot of fine shell in the sand of that mortar. That would sure be unsurprising if it was found in a coastal location. Where ever you found it more searching in that area could be rewarding.

So cool! Going to head back out there I found it on exposed river bed. There was shells all over the area and clay material not to far from it. Wonder if it was constructed all in the same spot.

Filler material in mortar was once just local sand, typically from river or lakeshore deposits, hence the occasional shell fragments found in older applications. This is frequently found with century old brickwork, such as the building my insurance agent has her office in.

Time for more coffee.
