Subject: Fw: Are You Older than Dirt?
>
> Someone asked the other day,,,,,,,,,,,,,
> 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'
> 'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,
> I informed him, ' All the food was slow.'
> 'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'
> 'It was a place called 'at home,' I explained!
> 'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, & if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'
> By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.
> Here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood, if I figured his system could have handled it:
> Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card.
> My parents never drove me to school. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow).
> We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 11, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God. It came back on the air at about 6 a.m. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people ...
> I never had a telephone in my room. Our only phone was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.
> Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was & so was bread.
> All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. He had to get up at 5 AM every morning .
> Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies! There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive.
> If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Don't blame me if they bust their gut laughing.
> Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

> MEMORIES:(not Mine either)
> My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.
> How many do you remember?
> Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
> Ignition switches on the dashboard.
> Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards .
> Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
> Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

I Don't remember
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards. I do remember tucking my pants Leg in my sock .

> Count all the ones that you remember , NOT the ones you were told about !
> Ratings at the bottom.
> 1. Candy cigarettes
> 2. Coffee shops with tableside juke boxes
> 3. Home milk delivery in glass bottles
> 4. Party lines on the telephones
> 5. Newsreels before the movie
> 6. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (Only 3 channels! If you had a TV!)
> 7. Peashooters
> 8. Howdy Doody
> 9. 45 RPM records
> 10. 78 rpm records
> 11. Hifi records 33 1/3 rpm
> 12. Metal ice trays with lever
> 13. Blue flashbulb
> 14. Cork popguns
> 15. Studebakers
> 16. Wash tub wringers
>
> If you remembered 0 to 3 = You're still young
> If you remembered 3 to 6 = You are getting older
> If you remembered 7 to 10 = Don't tell your age, &
> If you remembered 11 to 16 = You're older than dirt! THAT'S ME!
> I might be older than dirt but those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

it was easier for me to count the ones I Don't remember :

I Don't remember

7. Peashooters or 12. Metal ice trays with lever.

I have Heard of
Peashooters . Can't say I ever saw one unless I Dug it's remains. I Do remember using my Mouth as a pea Shooter :laughing7:

Dang ! I Just remembered #
12. Metal ice trays with lever.
We had them. When the Ice was Froze you Pulled the Lever & It Broke all the Ice Cubes loose from the Tray

Great post Jeff...

We had dart guns,

Mattel Shootin Shell pistols that shot a projectile,

https://www.wimp.com/a-1960s-ad-for-snub-nose-38-with-shoulder-holster-for-kids/

and cap guns with the caps in a roll...

View attachment 1834612

Didn't have to wear helmets when we rode our bikes.

yep, would be cool if I had all my cap guns yet.
Went though Many of those Paper rolls.

We used to lay a Roll on the pavement & Hit them with a Hammer too.

I've also used my thumb nail to set them off one by One.
Occasionally a spark would stick to the tip of my thumb, Making me Regret it for a Few seconds but Ultimatlly
a black spot on my fingernail lasted longer then the pain.
of course tasting the black spot was also a necessity :laughing7:

I seem to remember Round Paper Singles Too.

Ask the operator to call the number you repeated to Her, usually 5 digits.
Wooden cars and airplanes, you made the noise
Doctor came to your house
Radios that you listened to stories, plays, westerns, mysteries etc. Arthur Godfrey
Bulls eye, lag to the line, bull ring,my taw-marbles , playing for keeps
playing cards with clothes pin on your bicycle spokes
Everyone having diner around the kitchen table, with a prayer
Cardboard stopper in milk bottles, with cream on top
Ice blocks delivered by horse and wagon, sign on porch showed what size block you needed
Tetley Tea truck
Door to door salesmen
Grit, honest reporting and funny stuff
Running boards, AM radio only, fox tails on antenne,
Attendant pumped your gas @ 19.9c, washed your wind shield, checked your oil and tires.
Minnows were 3-4 dozen for $1
$0.35 per hour to work on farms,,,,yes I'm old but I have enjoyed what most can never have-complete freedom to roam the fields and woods

I'm a bit younger

I remember a lot of that stuff though, as it lingered into my childhood and faded away.

I don't remember getting a TV, I remember getting a COLOR tv.

Levered ice trays were still at grammas house, she listened to baseball on the radio and saved her cigarette coupons to to get stuff, and the house used skeleton keys.

Leaded and unleaded gasoline at full service gas stations.

Mom had a "bank book" she had to take with her.

She washed our daipers.

She made me eat my beets, or I went to bed.

She even whooped me with a belt and a paddle....I remember her smile of satisfaction too, lol.

Being a gun family, all my cap guns looked real and usually modeled after real guns. I even swapped a real one out of its case to joke with my dad. It was funny watching him figure it out.

I helped my 7th grade teacher by his first gun for home defense.

We ALL took a moment to watch a space launch.

I always wondered if candy cigarettes were made of old toothpaste. They looked and tasted like it.

Ash trays at the end of the aisle in the grocery stores.

My teacher smoking his pipe in the teachers lounge at school.

The wonders in the window of tobacco shop at the mall.

The smell of a Woolworth store.

Gramma bought me ice cream and sodas from the fountain at the drug store, when we walked there.....she never drove a car.

Never had a paper route....I delivered Avon books.

I miss the card catalog at the library.

I still have the set of encyclopedias the salesman sold my parents at the dining room table one night.

My electric trains didn't seem so boring to play with back then. YAY!!!! It goes in circles and smells funny.

We even had sniffable model glue.

LOL Me Too !

I hated computerization of my world. fought it for many years.

Considering my Anti Establishment Attitude as a Teen, I think I would have Left School Early,
Or simply pretended Ignorance on being able to Learn how to use them, no matter What.
If they had introduced Computers In my Class . :laughing7:

every day I probably would have insisted the teacher, come over and find what was needed and
maybe even do the typing. or hunt and peck 10 words an hour :tongue3:

that or purposely get Caught surfing Porn Sites. I remember learning computers in the libraries.
and would go on Lost Treasures web site Page.
some of the links were compromised and if you clicked
there were tons of Popups. a porn Pop up caused a Dozen Porn site Popups & They just kept Coming.
I would have to to get the Librarian to Get me Out.

I'm older than dirt..I remember everything mentioned so far. Our first TV had a round screen, Studebaker..had one, eating meals at the right time with all the family together and rules of the table as mentioned. Although things I didn't like to eat got conveniently left packed on a ledge under the table so I could leave..:laughing7:

Great Thread Jeff, did anyone mention S&H green stamps? Got them at the grocery store and you could trade a book of them in for a gift. That's how I got my first baseball glove...

Since Bart beat me to the Green stamps, how about those wood Rubber band guns? You could put several rubber bands at a time on them and shoot your sister with it.Till she took it away and beat your head with it. I,m definitely older than dirt,I recall almost all of those and scored a 15.

In the 1950's, my girlfriend's number was 'Wheeling 230". I had to tell the operator and she would ring the number.
In the 60's to call my USAF base in California, I needed only to tell the operator "LD-20" and she put me through.
Things were so much simpler then.
Don...
