I found these items at a 1840’s homesite. It’s in NW Florida about 30 miles south of the old Spanish Trail from St. Augustine to Pensacola. I’ve known the area for over 50 years as it was previously in my family from 1895 till 1950. The 1846 log home was moved to a pioneer museum about 30 years ago but the fireplace ruins are there so location wasn’t a problem for me. The upper left item looks similar to the photos I’ve seen of the early muzzle loaders. I’ve just recently got permission to detect the 40 acres that was settled in 1843 by a blacksmith and his family from NC. I know what most of the items are but the heavy brass looking part has me wondering. I also have pictured a few square nails, 1912 Lincoln cent, ALLEN clothing rivet, small button, positive battery end and another small brass what’s it. I’ve just started detecting and have a lot of ground to cover. The last photo is the gravesite I located from memory, it’s the original settlers that came from NC in 1843. Thanks for your help.

it sure does look a lot like a piece of a butt plate from a musket, I cant say from what rifle but I'm certain you're right with your own assessment
definitely an old site, good things are coming your way

May we see the other side of the brass item? Please take your photos in natural light and on a medium dark background (at least not white).

The small item below the penny could be a broken epaulette key.

Updated photos

I didn’t think about a rifle butt plate , it’s seems a little thick for that but that might be possible. Here’s some updated photos taken outside today. Also it’s not magnetic. More info on the area I’m searching in, was used as a repair and refurbishment location for wagons during the civil war. The 6th Florida Infantry was formed less than 20 miles away in Marianna Florida.

MUCH better pictures!

Butt plate part was my first thought as well. I have an 1840's East India Company musket with a very thick butt plate. Yours a little bit similar to the bottom portion of an India pattern Brown Bess. There's just not enough of it to know for sure.

Lots of history in the ground where you're digging, that is for sure.

Many thanks! I’ll get back soon and keep looking for more. Excited to see what the ground produces.
