I just finished a book entitled Pennsylvania Ghost Towns: Uncovering the Hidden Past.. It is a very good book and a very easy read. It give histories, current information, and direction to 46 different ghost towns in our state. The author did a great job of picking ghost towns all over the state. Here is more information:

I was able to buy it at my local bookstore (Border's) and they had it in the local/regional history section. Hope it helps.

Hi Guys,

I live up the road from you guys, right by Ohio/Pa border.

I just discovered a ghost town (Cannelton,Pa)old cannel coal mine town.

It's in the woods, original locale where miners lived, and get this, there were gambling joints/bars all along the street.

There is nothing there anymore except foundations, nature reclaimed it, must be careful, watch for wells, airshafts, etc.

If you guys are up for a hunt, let me know.I can fill you in on the details.

There are so many places and so little time,

That sounds like the place DrDetector and I checked out one January day; we ended up nearly having a gun pulled on us! It was in that area for sure.

Hi Halfdime,

That time of the year, people hunt all over the area.

I wouldn't be able to comment without knowing more.

So please explain, I'd love to hear about your ordeal.

Have you heard about the towns of Instanter and Straight that are now exposed due to the draining of the dam?

Came across an interesting link about the history of the mining town of Ricketts (near Lopez in Sullivan County)....seems like it was a pretty rowdy place "back in the day", even had a few murders. I checked out the area on foot over summer, and the entire area just has a spooky feel to it. Don't know if the link still works, but its www.harveyslake.org/gtnm/gtnm6.pdf

I've been to both Instanter and Straight, many times. Both were substantial towns, boasting as many as 400 inhabitants at times. I have found 2 Indian Head pennies at Instanter, one 1884 and the other 1894. There are many artifacts as well. Double bladed axe heads, splitting mauls, etc. Some could still be used after some cleaning up! Also, some 2-man saws but most of them are pretty brittle, yet completely whole, but no handles, of course. I've found many bottles, china doll heads and arms, eyeglass lens, glass buttons, and pocket-watch parts.
