Not to split hairs, but IMO that is a mattock. A mattock has a pick on one end and a broader, digging blade on the other. Popular with gravediggers many years ago. A pickaxe has a pick on one end and a chisel on the opposing end. They were intended for prying. Either way, a very nice find! I wish you well in cleaning it up. It could also be a tool used to bury treasure.

Found a couple days ago along part of the bayou that was dredged. Ran it through electrolysis but that’s the best I can seem to get it. I couldn’t imagine swinging that thing all day lol.
Nice recovery on the old Mattock, and sometimes are called Grub Hoes.
Looks like it could of used tad longer time in the bath as there's still surface rust.
Then slap a handle on that bad boy, start swinging it, and it'll shine up like a well used tool.
