For close ups use the macro setting. It should be marked with a flower icon on your camera. If your camera doesn't have macro setting (like mine) you can use a magnifying glass in front of the camera lens.

It also helps lots to have a tripod to hold the dang thing still and set the camera to self timer so you don't have to touch the camera.

Another thing that I do instead of using a camera (depending on the size) is to put the objects on my flatbed document scanner.
