It is a bummer. That is a brassy tone yes. I thought it might be a dirty mold. I also have a weird 2 reale that looks brassy. I guess I will hole it. It is still cool looking.

I am not of the opinion that this would have to be from the atocha. It is circa mid to late 1500's and could have been just around... Just saying.

I think you've misunderstood the responses you've received. What we're saying is that it's not a real coin. It's fake and not even a well made fake. Sorry.

No need to be nasty. It seems to have pretty good definition and rolled edges from hammering.

Not being nasty. Being more to the point because you were misinterpreting what you were being told.

What you show is a modern fake, made as a novelty. They were, and are still, sold as souvenirs. It appears to be cast, not struck. But even if struck, it's not a genuine coin and is not old.

FWIW....a hammered coin would not show edges as your coin has...there are parts of it with raised rim. Look at the detail in the oneyoureferenced and your coin and you will see that yours is just a jibber-jabber design.

Please take it to a coin shop...any coin shop. It is a very common copy.

don't take us the wrong way here.... we are not FB snarky BS-ers trying to one-up posters with "gotchas". Most of us are old retired (or past or prime at least) codgers with a lot of experience and knowledge to share. We tend to be blunt and to the point since we have usually answered the same questions again and again. Some of us are highly credentialed in our fields too but don't put it out there. If the consensus on this site is "X" , you can take it to the bank. AND if we don't know, we don't pretend like we do, but will refer you to others that can help.

I holed it above the cross. No real loss. Some of the patina came off. Hopefully I find a real cob someday.

I Agree that it looks like a souvenir type copy to me. The lions being struck through and the odd crown decoration are the first things that made me think so.
